Mob Psycho 100 anime review

mob-psycho-100     Mob Psycho 100 is about an ESPer in eighth grade named Shigeo Kageyama. He is also known as Mob. When he was younger he sought help from a local psychic named Reigen and has been under Reigen’s employ ever since to help him with exorcisms. Reigen is a fraud and doesn’t actually have any psychic powers which is a fact that he hides from Mob. Other characters include Mob’s younger brother Ritsu, the tiny green ghost named Dimple, and Teruki who is a strong ESPer from a nearby school. Mob is emotionally repressed and whenever his emotions reach 100 his powers go out of control. The series is about Mob’s journey through life as he tries to become popular.

This anime is hilarious. From Reigen’s fake exorcism’s to the way Dimple tries to tempt Mob everything is made funny. Not only this but the direction of the plot is almost always unpredictable. Where there would be a long fight scene in another shonen anime, in Mob Psycho 100 he fight scene is over in 7 seconds. I started my free trial on Crunchy Roll just so that I could watch the next episode the week it aired because I was shocked about a certain scene, then after watching the next episode I realized that that particular scene earlier had merely been a red herring.

The art style of Mob Psycho 100 is very simplistic with some added shading and detail to

the original mangaka’s (One) art style. However it isn’t always like this. Sometimes other art styles are used to complement what is currently going on in the story. A paint type texture is used to show ghosts and sometimes living people. The entire ending sequence at the end of each episode is done completely using this texture. The psychic powers of the ESPers are bright and colourful. This is one of the few times where I will be reviewing an anime using the art style because it was so beautiful.

Mob Psycho 100 is not the type of anime that you would watch if you like large fight scenes. While there are a couple of such scenes they do not follow the cliche shonen structure. The protagonist does not always get super powered at the end of the fight and win. The fights may be one sided. Mob Psycho 100 is instead the type of anime you would watch if you enjoyed unpredictable moments and humour. I really enjoyed this anime and hope that there will be in fact a second season sometime in the future.
